Alexander Rumyantsev is a leader in pediatric hematology-oncology, under his leadership, scientific-clinical protocols and methods for helping children with a large range of malignant and non-malignant pathologies are developed. He is the organizer of international cooperation, which allowed for a short period to significantly improve the results of treatment of patients with hematological and oncological diseases. Under his leadership, work is carried out in the field of cellular experimental technologies.
As a researcher, Professor Rumyantsev is known for his work in pediatric hematology and immunology, medical ecology, intensive and outpatient pediatrics, adolescent medicine, clinical blood physiology and pathophysiology, regulation of hematopoiesis and immune response, pathogenesis and treatment of hereditary blood diseases in children, intensive polychemotherapy and leukemia immunotherapy.
Doctor Rumyantsev participated in damage control and recovery after the Chernobyl disaster. He created “Chernobyl’s Children” research program. He supervised basic research on mechanisms of action of incorporated radionuclides in children after the Chernobyl disaster.
Professor Rumyantsev participated in development of the first Russian molecular arrays for leukemia diagnostics, creation of an umbilical cord blood bank which allows to extract progenitor blood cells for unrelated transplantations. He is supervised the first in Russia transplantations of cord stem cells to children with primary immunodeficiencies, hematological and oncological diseases.
In recent years, A.G. Rumyantsev and his staff actively develop new methods of hematopoietic stem cell, progenitor bone marrow cells, peripheral and cord blood transplantation for treatment of genetic, hematological and oncological diseases in children and adolescents.
In 1991, A.G. Rumyantsev founded the Institute of Pediatric Hematology, now – the Dmitry Rogachev National Medical Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology. Today Professor Rumyantsev is its president.
A.G. Rumyantsev is the author of more than 650 scientific papers, including 45 monographs and manuals, he prepared 70 doctors and 128 candidates of medical sciences.
