Academician of RAS N.N. Volodin is a leading specialist in the field of neonatology in our country, whose research interests are related to improving the effectiveness of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of congenital and perinatal diseases in children with very low and extremely low body mass, reducing infant mortality.

N.N. Volodin developed methods of artificial ventilation of the lungs, which allow restoring the breathing of newborns, solves the problems of damage to the central nervous system of children. For the first time, 2 generations of state educational standards for all specialties of training were created and introduced into the system of higher and secondary medical and pharmaceutical education, a system for assessing the quality of training was developed – Final state certification of graduates of universities and certification of specialists.

Professor Volodin is the undisputed leader of russian perinatology. Under his leadership, scientifically-based protocols for the diagnosis and treatment of children were developed and implemented, which made it possible to reduce infant mortality several times. He is also introducing new scientifically based approaches to the rehabilitation of children with hematological and oncological diseases, which has opened a new page in pediatric hematology and oncology. Under his leadership more than 40 dissertations were defended.

Nikolai N. Volodin published more than 350 scientific papers, including 25 monographs and manuals, 12 textbooks, received 11 copyright certificates and 4 patents for inventions.
